Do your employees have a different view of “security?”

TechEase Solutions asks: Do your employees have a different view of “security?” A recent Computerworld survey suggests that “companies… need to examine age-based perspectives and habits when it comes to risk assessment and policies.” More than 66 percent of “Generation Y” workers—folks who were born after 1980—use social networking applications such as Facebook, MySpace and YouTube at work. These applications may seem harmless, but often carry spyware and viruses that can compromise data integrity and result in significant downtime for themselves and their company. Younger workers also tend to store corporate data on Blackberrys, USB drives, and non-company-owned PCs, and often download and install software on work PCs for personal use. Such actions can violate licensing agreements and privacy laws, placing their employers at risk. While the majority of IT managers have policies that ban the aforementioned behaviors, this type of activity continues. Why? According to Computerworld, younger workers may not understand the risks associated with their actions. The best approach, therefore, is one that focuses on educating them about the perils of social networking and personal appliances in the workplace. Periodic security assessments and reviews of company policies are also recommended. Copyright © 2011, TechEase Solutions, Beavercreek, Ohio. All Rights Reserved.
